About the Founders

Sylvie Atanasio

The Visionary Behind the Ready-Made Decorative Tile & Stone Category

Sylvie Atanasio’s extraordinary career in the tile and stone industry is a testament to her innovative spirit, relentless drive, and creative genius. Her journey began with a passion for design and a desire to expand options in the industry, leading her to open her own retail store named Bolivar, after her father. This entrepreneurial start laid the foundation for her deep understanding of the market and customer needs.

Early Entrepreneurial Roots:
Sylvie’s first venture was Bolivar, a boutique tile store where she took bold steps to design and contract manufacture her own tiles, recognizing the limited artisan options available in the early 90s. This experience sparked her innovative approach and set the stage for her future breakthroughs.

Industry Experience & Design Skills:
Sylvie’s career advanced as she joined Ken Mason Tile, working under the guidance of Glenn Mason. During her time there, she honed her design skills by collaborating on collections for prestigious brands such as Ann Sacks, Waterworks, Artistic Tile, and Materials Marketing. Her creative talent and industry knowledge grew significantly in this role, laying a strong foundation for her later innovations.

Leadership & Sales Expertise:
Seeking further leadership opportunities, Sylvie held the position of National Sales Manager for Bedrosians’ Chinese factory. In this role, she was not only responsible for driving sales but also had the creative freedom to design new collections, which led to the successful launch of Alys Edwards. Sylvie conceived Alys more than just a product line but as her personal alter ego. The name Alys Edwards stands for “A is for Alter. E is for Ego,” symbolizing her playful and artistic approach to design.

The Brainchild: Alys Edwards:
Sylvie is credited with creating the ready-made decorative tile and stone category—a revolutionary concept that democratized high-end artisan aesthetics. Alys Edwards offered beautiful, artisan-inspired tiles that looked and felt more expensive than their price point, with quick lead times and affordability, fundamentally changing how designers and homeowners access decorative tiles.

Industry Impact & Recognition:
In her role as Managing Director, Sylvie propelled Alys Edwards to become a national sensation in less than four years, despite the economic recession. Her ability to foster strong relationships, combined with her sales acumen, helped solidify her reputation as an innovator and leader in the industry.

Beyond Design:
Sylvie’s influence extended beyond aesthetics; she restructured the sample department at her parent company, Bedrosians, from a lost profit center into a revenue stream by standardizing all display sample boards and implementing new revenue strategies. She introduced charges for sample packages to boutique dealers, implemented package charges and pallet charges, and added a 20% surcharge on outbound freight. These strategic changes significantly increased margins and set new standards for profitability in sample management.

Building a High-Performing Team:
Sylvie possesses a remarkable ability to build and lead teams composed of individuals with diverse qualities and strengths. She understands how to leverage these strengths and actively seeks out team members who bring different skills, attributes, and perspectives. Sylvie has achieved what few others can: she built a “dream team” powerhouse in design, sales, and customer service—dedicated to doing business her own way.

Legacy & Continued Innovation:
Today, Sylvie Atanasio is a founding partner at CasaSYMARI, where she continues to leverage her extensive experience, focusing on cultivating impact, innovation, and driving sales. Her pioneering work in creating the ready-made decorative tile & stone category remains a testament to her innovative spirit and her ability to see beyond the status quo.

Omar Torres

My Design Ethos

Every product begins with inspiration, a thought, a feeling or a need.
A glimmer of an idea might come from a period film, a book we found in a beautiful bookstore, vintage dishware or the print of a well-loved pillowcase. From my travels, I collect pictures, artifacts, and memories that open my mind to new possibilities. I combine design elements from different cultures and treasures from the furthest reaches of the globe with modern elements of pop culture to create truly unique products. Throughout my career, I have devised and utilized many methods of tile and product design. Innovation and dedication to design-authorship is one of the great rewards—and obligations—that belong to me as product designer. However, in my experience, no machine or other mechanized form of tile production has ever been able to replicate the beauty, richness and unmistakable uniqueness of handmade. Real people are the real makers through their variations and imperfections, which foster a human connection often missing in our industry. I feel it is critically important that we preserve the craft of hand-making surfaces by creating opportunities for the artists who do it and by cultivating an appreciation for their talents and techniques. I seek to create stone and ceramic surfaces that break all the rules by reimagining the current language of tile design from singular shape repetitions to organic textures of repetitive graphic patterns with depth perspective geometry and line.

Early Stages
Omar’s career started in 1997 right out of design school taking a job as sales/design representative in Long Beach CA, at the early stages of his career Omar worked for Pour La Maison, Walker Zanger, and Mission Tile West all very high end tile retailers known for their unique and artisanal products. These early experiences helped him develop a keen appreciation and understanding of handmade ceramics and exquisite natural stone finishes.

Entrepreneurial Drive
He started on a professional journey focused on architectural and product sourcing, during the early years of his career Omar realized that the industry lacked the more personalized project based material sourcing service, and that most designers and even architects lacked the knowledge in technical design and usage, that along with his ability to draft and create beautiful detailed perspective drawings led Omar to create Creative Basics his projects ranged from majestic million-dollar residential homes to multi-unit luxury developments.

The Beginning
Omar was one of a two-man design team based at Custom Floors/Marble Systems to design and renovate the West LA showroom. What started as a temporary short-term project turned into a 10-year tenure, quickly promoted to Creative Director taking responsibility for all product selection, showroom design and expansion.

Showroom Design and Construction

Creative Director/Product Design
During the 8 years as creative director he conceptualized and materialized 22 successful product collections ranging from natural stone, glass, ceramic and porcelain (the most under-used custom-order category), collectively generating over 16 million dollars in sales. When Omar took over as Creative Director Custom Floors was solely importing and selling, he was a key element in developing and setting up a production plant in Chantilly VA. Recruiting talent and vetting material suppliers in Mexico and Europe, Custom Floors started digitizing tile and quickly entered into the digital printing category. He was instrumental in training local talent to understand western aesthetics and the art of the arabesque. As creative director Omar learned the business of global sourcing and developed a network of factories and artisanal studios worldwide.
